Fall Foliage PlantsPlanting fall foliage plants and flowers is becoming more popular as home gardeners are looking for ways to continue the beauty of their gardening late into the fall months. During autumn, the leaves in the yard are turning beautiful shades of yellow, red, and purple, so why not consider fall foliage plants and flowers that will also add to the beauty of a fall landscape? Most fall foliage plants and flowers are beautiful throughout every season and can help to establish a low maintenance landscape design as well as add beauty in the fall and winter months in an otherwise dying garden.

Virginia Creeper

A popular groundcover plant used often in North America, it is especially known for the beautiful vibrant red color of foliage it produces in the spring. Keep in mind that while this foliage adds beauty with groundcover in the summer and fall months, it does have a tendency to get out of hand if it isn’t properly cared for and cut back several times throughout the year. The Virginia Creeper also adds beauty in the summer with tiny flowers and in the fall and winter with tiny black berries that can feed nearby birds and wildlife. Remember that although the Virginia Creeper is considered a groundcover fall foliage plant, it will also attach itself to other plants and nearby trees.

Firebush

A wonderful summer and fall foliage plant and flower, the Firebush produces beautiful bright red blossoms in the summer month with dark green foliage and a deep red to purple foliage in the fall months. Depending on the climate zone region, the Firebush plant can be either a perennial or annual. In North America, it is native to Florida and will do well year round in that mild climate, but may not do as well in colder climate zones of North America. In warmer climate zones, the Firebush may never actually turn to colors, as it will continue to flower and grow year round.

Witch-Alder

A beautiful and dependable fall foliage plant and flower, Witch-Alder is a deciduous shrub that will usually grow between 6 to 10 feet in height and will remain in the shape of a rounded mound. While small white to pink flowers appear in the early spring and summer months, many gardeners plant Witch-Alder for their beautiful fall foliage that can range from red to yellow or golden orange. Keep in mind that often all of these colors can appear on the same shrub, so if you are looking for a particular color pattern for your , you need to be careful about where you place this in your garden. Witch-Alder is usually fairly hardy year round, with dark green foliage, but will need partial shade if planted in a hot weather climate zone.

Red Chokeberry

A beautiful fall foliage plant and flower that is easy to care for and provides a beautiful display throughout all four seasons, the Red chokeberry bush is almost a necessity in any year round landscape. In the spring, the Red Chokeberry offers beautiful green foliage and tiny white flower clusters, in the fall the shrub will produce red berries that last well into the winter months and will also produce beautiful orange to red foliage in the fall months. The Red Chokeberry shrub can be planted almost anywhere in a landscape design because it tolerates shade and poor soil, although it does best with at least partial sunshine in the summer months.
